Exploring the Hidden Gems of New Jersey: A Guide to the Charming Main Street You Need to Visit

In Milford, New Jersey, you'll find more than just a bunch of shops. The main street is filled with various hidden treasures that you might easily overlook if you drive too quickly past this small street that abuts the Delaware River. From undiscovered treasures and historical B&B's to flights of empanadas, a viral rainbow cookie cake and NJ's first Brewery, there is something for everyone in this quaint town.

Our initial stop was a visit to a charming small-batch bakery called Chocolate in the Oven, where we enjoyed a latte and pastries. While you might recognize their popular Rainbow Cookie Cake, rest assured that every item in this bakery is outstanding. In addition to pastries, they craft their own ice cream and offer a complete coffee and latte service at their café. They also collaborate with local farms and wineries to produce exceptional truffles.

Following our dose of caffeine and sugar, we went antiquing at Allen Antiques. Allen is the owner of three spacious buildings on main street, all brimming with vases, furniture, lamps, vintage jewelry, records, and other distinctive collections. Allen also co-owns Maker's Alley, an art and artisan collective/gallery located in a historic bank on Bridge Street.

We were told by the locals that we couldn't leave Milford without trying a flight of HiiQuality Empanadas. With about ten different types of empanadas, we had a hard time narrrowing down to three. All homeade by the owner herself, the mushroom and carmelized onion empanada was worth the drive! Another standout item was the spiral potato on a stick, a unique treat that was unlike anything we had tried before. The homemade dipping sauce added an extra layer of flavor. HiiQuality also provides catering and charcuterie services.

Following our lunch, perched high on the banks of the scenic Delaware river, we stumbled upon a charming Victorian Bed and Breakfast established in 1860. The Chestnut Hill on the Delaware B&B, along with the adjacent Country Cottage, are exquisitely maintained accommodations from the Victorian era, providing breathtaking views of the sunset over the river.

Our day ended with a wagon wheel of beer at NJ's first Brewery, Descendants Brewing Company. Located at the Old Ship Inn, Descendants holds the distinction of being the first brewery in the state to brew beer on-site since the Prohibition era. Standing out as one of the few breweries in New Jersey that also offers a food menu, their culinary offerings are influenced by the owner's German, Belgian, and English roots, which is reflected in the brewery's name, Descendants. For non-beer enthusiasts, fear not, as Descendants boasts one of the most extensive whisky collections in the region, featuring over 250 options sourced from various parts of the world.
